While it is safe to say that I have wanted to be an artist since I was old enough to pick up a crayon, I can honestly say that I had no idea what that actually meant until recently. When I was young, I thought that being an artist meant having your art framed and hung in a museum. I had the notion that an artist’s ultimate goal was to impress others and become famous, and if you failed at that you failed as an artist. It was not until high school that I began to understand that this outlook is definitely not the case. It is not that I do not care if people enjoy my art or that I would not love to see my work in a museum, but rather I have come to realize that that is not the only way to succeed as an artist. To me, art is about forging a connection with the world and understanding that I am just one person contributing to something much larger than myself. Instead of feeling depressed about the inevitable realization that the world does not, in fact, revolve around me, I take comfort in knowing that art gives me a way to make my mark in some small way and has taught me to never take myself too seriously.
